The Pre-Engaged Starter Motor is the type where the pinion drops down onto the tops of the ring gears teeth  - Type "Pre Engaged Starter Motor" into Google and you'll see plenty of pictures.

The Inertia Starter Motor is the type where the pinion shoots forward into the side of the ring gear - Type "Inertia Starter Motor" into Google and you'll see plenty of pictures.
